The Advantages and Disadvantages of Wix Websites

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Wix Websites

What is Wix?

Wix is a popular web development service that allows its users to create HTML5 websites and mobile sites.

Wix aims to give its users freedom and ease of use when creating their site. In the wix editor you can drag and drop a long list of elements and features on the page. You can also design your own custom theme from scratch.

Unfortunately, Wix website SEO had a bad reputation in the past. It was impossible to add alt tags to images and optimise title tags and meta-descriptions, among other things. The wix website builder also used to be a Flash-based site builder which led to some SEO issues.

In the last few years however they have made great improvements including rectifying the aforementioned issues and moving on from Flash. With the aim of competing with sites such as WordPress, they have added a range of SEO features that are easy to use for beginners.

Is Wix Good for SEO?

Advantages of Wix SEO

Wix now provides all the features most users will need for improving their SEO. It is now possible to customise meta-titles and descriptions, connect Google Webmaster, add canonical tags, and more.

The Wix SEO Wiz tool is new and helps users improve their SEO by analysing their website and giving them a personalised plan with actionable steps to follow. The guide is useful for beginners as it gives advice on writing title tag and image alt text. It will not make you an SEO expert overnight but it is a good introduction.

There are other website builders with a greater range of advanced SEO features, but Wix is a strong choice for small businesses and blogs due to its ease of use. You do not need to have any coding knowledge either.

Wix offers Google integration, you are able to easily connect Google Analytics and Google Search Console which are both great SEO tools to your Wix site.

With mobile traffic accounting for over half of world wide web traffic in 2020, it is important to have a website that is mobile friendly. Wix is now a good SEO choice for mobile-friendly websites, which Google values.

Here is a checklist of Wix SEO features for reference:

  • Edit H tags (H1 etc)
  • Edit title tags & meta-descriptions
  • Custom page URLs
  • Set canonical tags
  • SEO patterns for default settings
  • Templates for mobile sites
  • Edit alt-tags on images
  • A decent PageSpeed score
  • Integration of Google Analytics & Search Console
  • Implement 301 redirects
  • Structured data
  • XML sitemap (however this cannot be edited)
  • HTTPS

Disadvantages of Wix SEO

The Wix website builder does however come with some disadvantages compared to other site builders. It is generally not the best for more technical customisation. Wix adds extra strings to some URLs which can be irritating and also does not let you customise your sitemap.

They do offer multilingual sites, but it is not ideal for SEO on larger websites as you cannot use unique URLs for each language. Wix does not offer AMP support, so if you want to make an AMP version of your site it is impossible to do so.

Another issue is that you are unable to export your Wix site. If you have built your website with Wix then you will be incapable of exporting your site to somewhere like WordPress if you wanted to expand or have more technical SEO options.

To move sites then, you have to go through the process of saving all the data and re-uploading it on a new site and destroying the old wix website. This can be a very time-consuming process depending on the size of your site.

SEO Agencies

Overall Wix is a reliable option for small businesses and bloggers and can rank well on search engines. It is possible to use a free version, but to access more features such as more storage and a custom domain you need to pay. Wix pricing starts at £3 a month for the basic plan, and rises to £18 a month for the VIP plan.

Sometimes to get the best SEO for your site it is wise to leave it to an SEO agency. An agency is likely to have more knowledge than you and will be able to use the best tools and strategies to get the best out of your site.

Outsourcing your SEO will also give you more time to focus on other aspects of your business. An SEO agency will take time-consuming activities off your hands such as keyword research and content writing.
